4th edition of AMIW at Casa da Cultura da Trofa - Just as in the past editions, entries from 'Dicionário da Crítica Feminista' (Amaral and Macedo 2005) have been used to support the artists' work.

“Listen to this,” you started one day, “I met an alien species yesterday.”
“Really?” I answered.
“Yes. She came up to me and introduced herself, when I was buying oranges at the market. She was very impressive with her brightly coloured thick skin that sparkled in the summer sun. She wore brown uniform clothes, and on her chest (I could not really detect if she had something we would call breasts) was a small metal brooch in the form of probably a star ship.”
“And she spoke Portuguese with you?”
“Yes, she did. She said she was just visiting, having a break from her busy job as an account manager. She found it remarkable that people were not noticing her.
I wasn’t either of course.”
“And then you went for a cup of coffee together, I imagine.”
“No, actually a cup of tea. The species of planet Plankton, where she was from, are well known for their traditional coffee, so she wanted to try a herbal tea.”
“Come on, Carla, stop wasting my time. This is really bad science fiction.”
“Yes, I am sorry. I wasn’t concentrating.”

“Ouve isto!”
“A sério?” Respondi.
“Sim.
“Anda lá Suzanne, não me faças perder tempo. Isto é mesmo má ficção científica.”
“Sim, desculpa. Não estava concentrada.”

“But whom or what did you meet then?” I started two days later.
“It was of course a male species that approached me,” you continued.
“Really?”
“Well, Planktonians don’t have biological differences amongst each other. Physically everybody is the same, the creature explained to me. They have a difference between Alphas and Bètas and that could be comparable with the male/female division on earth. Genetically Bètas are better in taking care of people. And Alphas, like the creature was, are good leaders, explorers and researchers.”
“Seriously?”
“I am just repeating what it told me.”
“And do they acknowledge something like marriage?”
“It happens to be, that to create the perfect balance between two Planktonians, it is preferable that one is Alpha and the other Bèta. Plankton is a planet of great harmony it told me.”
“Okay, I understand. Do marriages between two Alphas or two Bètas ever happen?”
“It said, that everybody knew this attraction amongst Alphas and amongst Bètas was clearly a result of a brain deflection, though it seems they function normally in daily life. They allow it, because they don’t take it seriously.”
“Wow, this is the first alien species I hear about, that doesn’t protect the purity of their race.”
“Don’t be silly. Do you think they allow these homogeniae to reproduce themselves? Planktonians are not stupid. At a certain point in history —a long time ago— it was democratically decided that only Bètas could carry babies, since they were better in looking after children. After a while a clause called section 28 was added to this law and prohibited reproduction within homogenial relationships.”

“A sério?”
Fisicamente toda a gente é igual, a criatura explicou-me.

July 23, 2005

“Could I ask you another thing about your encounter with this alien species,” I needed to ask after another few days.
“Of course,” you said, “what would you like to ask?”
“Well, if these homogeniae are not allowed to reproduce themselves, and they are not busy with taking care of children, then they have spare time, haven’t they?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, they have a lot of time to think about their position in the Planktonian society, I mean how this position is constructed by society. Maybe something we would call emancipation?”
“I don’t know. However, the creature said that homogenial attraction amongst Planktonians seems to be happening more and more.”
“O.”
“And I believe it was exactly this why this researcher was here. It wanted to solve the question how a defect like this could increase, when they are fully in control of genetically and biologically purifying the process of reproduction.”
“Right.”

“Why do these homogeniae want to get married anyway?”
“Hey, you mentioned the word marriage, not me.”

Verbetes = Estereótipo e Queer / Stereotype and Queer

(Amaral e Macedo, 2005)

Verbete = Contos de Fadas / Fairy Tales

The result of this division in the behaving of the characters of the tales leads that these become inhibiting to girls, encouraging them to passivity and apathy, instead of set off a balanced developing of their potentialities and personality." (Amaral and Macedo, 2005)

IMAGEM

(Amaral e Macedo, 2005)

CYBERFEMINISM
"«Between the NOT anymore and the Not yet », that leads us to rethink the concept of female body as a cultural construction and a interface, a boarder of heterogenic and non continuous energies, a surface where multiple codes are inscribed (race, class, sex, age, etc,) (Braidotti 2000) … characterizes women as nomadic beings that travel permanently in between languages and cultures, intervening and interacting always, invading boarders and dissolving models and patriarchal heritages.

Ciborgues, that is, «chimeras», hybrids beings, fractured identities..." (Amaral e Macedo, 2005)
